On Patrol Training Police Bikes F.A.Q.s Intro
Frequently Asked Questions
Can officers on bike patrol make traffic stops and arrests?
Arrests on bike patrol are just as valid as being stopped by a squad car. Officers have cited motorists ranging from drunk driving to speeding violations and anything between.
Why do the bicycles cost so much, couldn't you save money by buying a $100.00 bike instead?
The old saying "You get what you pay for" really applies here. Our officers range in weight from as little as 125 pounds to over 250 pounds in full gear. Only a well built bike can hold up to the demands and maneuvers officers put them through.
Can officers respond to calls for service?
Absolutely, and they often do. If a bike patrol officer is within a mile of a call for service he/she can usually get there about the same time a patrol car can and often times even quicker.
Do we really need cops on bikes?
Answer is a resounding YES. Bike patrol is a very valuable and useful tool in law enforcement. Citizens often have positive comments of bike patrol officers in their neighborhoods. Bike patrol allows officers to have a more personal contact with citizens and can cover much more area than "foot patrol".
How much does it cost taxpayers for these bicycles and 24 hours of LEBA training/certification.
Almost no cost. FDL cyclery and Attitude sports have donated several bikes to the PD, and many more were bought with grant money. Training is done "in house" by LEBA certified FDL Officer Duveneck.
